Presentation: Queer Poetics: Understanding the Sexual Intimacy of Gender Non-Conforming People
Time: Breakout Session 1
Often times in our lives and influences, sexual intimacy is portrayed within the binary, within the context of “man” or “woman”. Through the use of Queer Poetry, this interactive workshop seeks to promote a better understanding of what love is, what it can be between people who do not conform to prevailing gender stereotypes.
1. Introductory material on trans and gender non binary individuals. Define terms (Trans, non conforming, Bi, Poly, etc) short history of discrimination. Typical expectations for sexual intimacy in a cis-gender world.
2. Discuss specific barriers to care / “hang ups” experienced by the LGBTQ community when it comes to sexual practices. Explain how intersectionality impacts the lives of GLBTQ individuals, and ramifications for care and provision of services.
3. Through the use of Queer Poetry, help workshop participants gain a better understanding of sexual intimacy with partners who’s bodies may not fit the traditional image of “man” or “woman”. Debunk prejudices.
