Presentation: It Takes a Village to End LGBTQ Youth Homelessness
Time: Breakout Session 3
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) young people are often subject to harassment at school, erasure in faith communities, rejection from their families and hostility in youth-serving systems. This systematic abuse leads LGBTQ youth to have significantly higher rates of depression, suicide, substance abuse and homelessness, to name just a few harmful outcomes.
Safe and Supported, A project of Lighthouse Youth Services, leads the country in an innovative array of LGBTQ youth homelessness prevention and intervention programs. Initiated by the U.S, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2014, Safe and Supported garnered broad community support in the development of a plan to make LGBTQ youth homelessness rare and when it does occur, brief.
This workshop will explore the history, activities, successes and challenges of a community led initiative to end LGBTQ youth homelessness in Hamilton County (Cincinnati), Ohio by 2020.
1. Identify causes of LGBTQ youth homelessness.
2. Understand outcomes associated with LGBTQ youth homelessness and family rejection.
3. Explore elements of Safe and Supported and Lighthouse Youth Service’s plan to end LGBTQ youth homelessness by 2020.
